TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A Vigo County correctional officer was suspended last month after pointing a firearm at another officer.

Danika Mitchell is back to work following a five-day suspension; however, she no longer carries a department-issued gun.

According to Sheriff John Plasse, the incident began with a footrace between Mitchell and another employee. She un-holstered her weapon and placed it in the holster of another officer.

After losing the race, she jokingly commented something along the lines of “do it again and I’ll draw on you on.” When she retrieved her gun, she pointed it at the person she was joking with.

Plasse said Mitchell’s comments were not seen as a threat, but her reckless actions warranted the suspension.

Mitchell has been reprimanded by the department on three other occasions not related to the June incident, Plasse said.
