VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – For any residents that may have old tires laying around, Vigo County’s annual tire amnesty day can help.

Tires can provide the perfect breeding location for mosquitoes and take up a lot of space. That’s why the Vigo County Health Department is about to hold its 20th annual tire amnesty program.

Vigo County residents can drop off up to ten tires during the amnesty day. Health department staff explained why getting rid of old tires is important to keep mosquitoes at bay.

“Tires are a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes since they’re well-insulated and they’re able to hold water and it provides a protection for the mosquito eggs,” said Andrew Martin, Vigo County Health Department public health intern.

The tire disposal helps to keep the Vigo County community in good health.

“Tire collection has been an uprising event over the past years so this really helps combat West Nile virus and keep it from being prevalent in our community,” said Shelby Jackson, Vigo County public health educator and media coordinator.

The Vigo County Health Department’s Tire Amnesty program is from April 3 – May 5 and is for Vigo County residents only according to the health department.

It’s by appointment only and those wanting to participate will have to show proof of Vigo County residency. Residents can call 812-234-9181 to schedule an appointment.
