TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Saturn Petcare is one step closer to receiving a 10-year tax abatement from the Vigo County Council.

The council approved a resolution making Saturn Petcare an economic revitalization area at its meeting on Wednesday. This is a necessary step needed to get a tax abatement.

Much of the discussion surrounding Saturn Petcare was its intention on hiring local people. This is a key factor for governing bodies who have the ability to hand out tax abatements.

“The discussion tonight was hinged around actually having language within this current abatement request assuring the council that they use local labor for the project,” Council President Aaron Loudermilk.

The potential tax abatement would kick start an expansion project from Saturn Petcare that would create 50 additional jobs. The plan is to double the number of production lines in the facility. Saturn Petcare COO Andy Volkl said they’re committed to the community and intend to hire locally.

“The community is important for me but also our owners too,” Volkl said. “We’re a family-owned business so we want to support local business.”

A December meeting is expected to be set to take up the potential Saturn Petcare tax abatement.

Also at the meeting, Thrive West Central Executive Director Ryan Keller introduced the ‘Resilient’ study to the council. It targets the 20 most pressing challenges facing west central Indiana.

Keller explained it’s important to introduce this data driven study to local officials.

“It’s letting elected officials and key stakeholders in the community know that this kind of analysis and study is out there,” Keller said.
