VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Vigo County Council has approved the funding needed to provide the county with the first-ever county-owned morgue.

According to a press release from the Vigo County Coroner, the budget was approved by the council on Tuesday, September 12 and the Vigo County Coroner’s Office is grateful for the much-needed storage space.

The approval of the project will also help to foster a partnership between the coroner’s office and other surrounding counties that have been struggling with storage space. Working with the county commissioners, the coroner’s office is also working to secure contracts with vendors to allow the office to transfer to an electronic data-collecting system.

Additionally, the county was recently awarded a $3,270 dollar grant from the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) allotted for supplies that will help to improve death investigations. The grant was part of a larger grant program with the CDC to improve the implementation, planning, and evaluation of violence prevention programs.
