CASEY, Ill. — A group of veterans who served together in Vietnam 48 years ago were back together again this week for a reunion in Casey, Illinois.
The group had their first reunion in 1981, and have been getting together every two or three years since then.
“Suddenly 22 different people from around the country got thrown together 10,000 miles from home in an area called South Vietnam, and we got along great, good group of guys,” Donald Stephen, who was first lieutenant of the platoon, said.
Stephen was the first to call for a reunion, saying he felt the need to get everyone together to remember old times.
“We’re a pretty tight knit group, it’s good to see them all after all these years, it’s fun,” Ken Iron said.
The reunions have been held all over the country, including in Washington, D.C.
“It’s the camaraderie,” said Mike Daugherty. “In the early years, it was about your kids, how are they were growing up, what they were doing, and now it’s mostly what are the grandkids doing.”
