VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Over 20% of residents in Vigo County are smokers of some kind.
Tobacco Free Vigo, and Vigo Voice hosted an event to provide education about the dangers of vaping. As reported in our previous stories this week, vaping is an ongoing issue in Vigo County, especially with the youth.
In Vigo County, about 5% of middle school students and about 7% of high school students reported vaping in the last 30 days.
Tobacco prevention coordinator Shannon Giles said some things about vaping can be misleading.
“It was originally marketed as the healthy alternative to smoking and a lot of people started doing it because they thought it was a better way. However, vapes can contain a pack or more of nicotine. So in many cases they’re actually more harmful,” Giles said.
Indiana ranks 3rd in the nation for vaping.
