TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana Health officials say vaccinations for long-term facilities began this week around the state.

CVS Health says it is one of two providers selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to administer the vaccine to long-term care facilities.

CVS began administering vaccines to more than 40,000 nursing and assisted living facilities Dec. 21 to states across the country. That effort is now underway in Indiana.

“Either they come down to us if they’re able but even if they’re not able we’ll go room to room to insure everyone in the facility that desires to get the vaccine appropriately receives it,” said CVS PharmD, Johari Martin.

The company began administering vaccinations to Indiana long-term health facilities on Dec. 28.

Knox County health officer Dr. Alan Stewart says it’s appropriate for long-term facilities to be one of the first to receive the vaccine, due to the vulnerability of the residents.

“Significant number of deaths have occurred in our long-term care facilities,” said Dr. Stewart. “In our community individuals who are 80-plus years of age compromise about 10% of our infections and about 60% of our fatalities.”

Springhill Village, a member of American Senior Communities (ASC), has begun administration of the vaccine and is partnering with CVS and its long-term care pharmacy, Omnicare, which is experienced in serving seniors. The vaccine is being offered free to all residents and staff in two doses, given 28 days apart. Springhill’s goal is to have 100% of its residents and staff vaccinated. To that end, Springhill has aggressively provided education and counseling to ensure compliance. It was giving residents the vaccine on Tuesday.

Martin says CVS has brought more people onto their team to carry out the vaccination effort, something they are proud to be a part of.

“If you talk to any healthcare worker, we’ve always wanted to make a difference and this is a huge undertaking,” said Martin.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also partnered with Walgreens to carry out vaccinations at long-term care facilities.
