CLINTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A man is dead after his car was pulled from the Wabash River in Clinton, Ind. early Friday morning. Clinton Police Chief Billy MacLaren confirmed the driver had been pursued by police through the city of Clinton before driving into the river.

MacLaren said the situation began at 4:13 p.m. with a call to dispatch reporting an impaired driver. Officers pulled the car over at 4:25 p.m. and began to get the driver’s information when he took off, initiating the pursuit.

“They turned on Elm Street, went down to the river and he ended up putting his vehicle into the river,” MacLaren said.

Water rescue divers were on scene within 15 minutes of the car going into the water, Maclaren said. Due to the cold and swift water, divers had trouble getting hooked onto the vehicle. The team was able to get the car removed from the river at about 12:30 a.m. Friday.

MacLaren confirmed the driver died. A cause of death is under investigation. The Vermillion County coroner is expected to perform the autopsy today. The Identity of the deceased has not been released. No one else was in the car.
