WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Two people were arrested after separate shooting incidents in the same area over the weekend.

According to the Washington Police Department, on Sunday at 1:15 a.m., they along with the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Antique Bar on E. Main Street.

Officers on scene were told that a physical altercation had taken place between 30-year-old Edwin Gilberto Marrero Gelpi and a female.

Police said it was reported that while Gelpi was leaving the scene, he “pointed a handgun at an individual and fired multiple shots into the air.”

Gelpi was found at a residence on W. Walnut Street and was arrested on multiple charges.

He was taken to jail on charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, pointing a firearm and domestic battery.

At 3:37 a.m., the same officers were dispatched again to the area of Antique Bar on E. Main St. of another report of shots fired.

Police said it was reported that a large fight had taken place and the suspect, 28-year-old Moises Vargas, fired a handgun into the air. Witnesses told police he left in a vehicle.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.

A handgun was found during the traffic stop. Vargas was taken into custody on a charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.

No injuries were reported during either incident.

Police said they do not suspect the two incidents were related.
