MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A driver dozing off while headed into a construction zone reportedly caused a crash that blocked both lanes of Interstate 70 eastbound for hours Monday morning.

According to Monrovia Police Chief Matt Wright, the crash occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. when the driver of a Ford pickup truck pulling an empty flatbed trailer dozed off and almost ran into a barrier wall headed into a construction zone. The driver told police that he was able to swerve to miss the wall, but that the trailer made contact and became wedged between both barriers blocking the eastbound lanes of traffic.

The truck’s bumper was reportedly ripped from the truck as a result, and a second vehicle crashed into the trailer but suffered only minor damage as both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Wright said the crash was cleaned up by 8:30 a.m. but that crews kept the roadway closed as crews replaced the construction barrier to prevent further incidents. The roadway was re-opened just before 10 a.m.
