VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Erosion issues have led to the closure of a state road in Vermillion County as INDOT crews perform repair work.

According to an INDOT release, a portion of State Road 71 located about 5 miles east of Newport is scheduled to be closed as of Monday, Dec. 5.

This is a permanent repair project that addresses erosion issues caused by the Little Vermilion River. The river is causing the ground supporting S.R. 71 to give way. The contractor will build a concrete wall and drive soil nails, up to 30-feet in length, into the slope that goes down to the river.

INDOT Release

The closure is located along SR 71 between County Road 50 S and County Road 25 W. Work is expected to take about a month to complete. The estimated re-opening is set for the beginning of January, weather permitting.
