TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute Police Department’s K-9 unit won several wards after competing in a K-9 Olympics in Indiana.

THPD won first place in several categories, including narcotic detection.

K-9 Trainer Sergeant, Justin Sears, said they train 16 hours as a unit every month, but each handler takes initiative to do additional training.

“We’re good because everybody does stuff on their own. They have training plans and they go out. To be a good K-9 handler, above average K-9, you have to do something every day,” He said.

The competition took place north of Peru, Indiana, and brought in over 100 participants from around the world.

THPD also is excited to welcome a new K-9 to its team.

“It’s always fun to train new dogs,” Sears said.
