TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Vigo County School Corporation added a new early learning center to its fleet of schools.
The Deming Early Learning Center will house kindergarten classes, special education, Pre-K and will feature the first full day Pre-K in the corporation.
The schools principal, Ashley Bennett, said that this school will be a big benefit for both students and parents.
“This is also the first place to have a full day preschool program in the school corporation,” Bennett said. “This is a really big deal for a lot of working parents.”
The United Way of the Wabash Valley reported that only 35% of children in Terre Haute are enrolled in quality childcare programs.
VCSC Director of Communications Bill Riley said that the corporation took note of this, and they set out to correct it.
“It’s a problem with kindergarten readiness and it can follow a student all the way through graduation,” Riley said. “So a solid start for our youngest learners is very, very important,”
Bennett echoed the importance of having the school available for students.
“We’re giving much more space for those kids that maybe couldn’t afford before to go to a high quality place,” Bennett explained. “All of our title one students are free to attend full day Pre-K so that helped a lot of families in the whole community.”
Over 285 students are enrolled at the Deming Early Learning Center.
