TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Terre Haute man faces six felony charges related to dealing drugs and unlawfully possessing firearms.

Brian O. Coates, 51, of Spruce Street, was arrested on November 14 following an investigation and search of his residence by the Vigo County Drug Task Force.

A probable cause affidavit filed in the case shows that police seized 1.8 pounds of marijuana, nearly 3.2 ounces of cocaine, and 3.2 ounces of methamphetamine from his home and vehicle following surveillance of the property and the execution of a search and seizure warrant.

Vigo County Detectives also seized nearly $3,500 in cash, a digital scale, and two 9mm handguns, one of which was listed as being stolen.

Arresting officers said Coates admitted that everything belonged to him, and that he would travel to Muncie to pick up narcotics.

Coates has been charged with the following;

  • Dealing in cocaine (10 or more grams)
    • A level 2 felony
  • Dealing in methamphetamine (10 or more grams)
    • A level 2 felony
  • Dealing in marijuana (between 30 grams & 10 pounds)
    • A level 6 felony
  • Possession of cocaine (more than 28 grams)
    • A level 3 felony
  • Possession of methamphetamine (more than 28 grams)
    • A level 3 felony
  • Unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon
    • A level 4 felony
  • Possession of marijuana
    • A class B misdemeanor

Court records show that Coates appeared in Vigo County Superior Court 3 for an initial hearing on Monday morning. A public defender was appointed to represent Coates moving forward in the case. A second hearing is scheduled for December 7.
