TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Monday morning the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation department held its 11th annual memorial day 5K and a one-mile fun run.

The event took place at Deming Park. Medals were awarded, to age group winners, in the 5K race, and all runners received a participation medal. Attendees ran in honor of veterans and those currently in active service.

Organizers say it’s a time to remember those who have served and given their lives for our country.

“We take this incredible seriously. It’s a very patriotic community where we want to celebrate the service of our honorable men and women who have served in our U.S. military,” said Kilie Smith, Director of Recreation for the City of Terre Haute.

Proceeds from the event, benefit youth programs, put on by the terre haute parks and recreation department.
