The Terre Haute Humane Society is expecting – kittens!
Kitten season is upon us, and the Humane Society is gearing up to receive many litters of kittens ready to be spayed, neutered, vaccinated and adopted out to many loving homes. To prepare for these exciting arrivals, the shelter is inviting the community to participate in a “Kitten Shower.”
The Kitten Shower will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Humane Society, 1811 South Fruitridge Ave.
The event will feature a Fostering 101/Volunteering seminar at 1 p.m., games, and, best of all, kitten cuddles!
Although this event is free, cash donations or donations of cat/kitten supplies are requested and can be dropped off during the event, or any time after the event during the shelter’s normal hours of operation. Supplies needed are:
- Baby food (preferably ham flavored to help feed newborn kittens)
- Cans of soft pate kitten food
- KMR (kitten milk replacer) cans & powder
- Kitten bottle/nipple sets
- Bath towels (these do not have to be new)
- Small flannel/fleece blankets (these do not have to be new)
- Small stuffed toys
- Clay litter and litter scoopers
- Small litter boxes
- Heating pads or heating disc & covers
- Unscented baby wipes
- Gauze pads/cotton balls
- Gram scales
There is no limit on the amount of items that needed, and anything donated will be greatly appreciated!
Due to their breeding cycles, this time of year is the most common for female cats to get pregnant, causing great amounts of kittens to be born around nine weeks later. As a result there is a notable increase in kittens born and brought to shelters (often along with pregnant and/or nursing mothers), which makes it extremely difficult for shelters to find the resources and space for each of the kittens and cats brought in.
To make a donation, visit THHS during its normal hours of operation: from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. THHS is closed on Mondays.
Monetary donations for the Kitten Shower can also be made online at www.thhs.org. Click on the “Donate Now” button at the bottom of the page, and then enter Kitten Shower as the designation on the donation page. Donations can also be made on the Humane Society’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/thhumane.
