TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Team of Mercy and Downtown Terre Haute are teaming up to break the stigma around mental health, with the help of some four-legged friends.

The first ‘Downtown Terre Haute Dog Days of Summer’ will be held on August 5, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. along Wabash Ave.

It will feature a dog show with 24 furry contestants. The dogs will be chosen based on the money raised. The winner will get the title of ‘Top Dog.’

At no cost, attendees can enjoy a dog-friendly foam party, obstacle course and cooling area, and more fun and food for their humans.

Live music will be offered and nearby downtown restaurants will be selling drinks and food.

All money collected will go towards Team of Mercy and the services the organization provides.

“It’s the true essence of what community means. Everybody pulling together for a cause that may not be the greatest topic to talk about. But, that’s exactly why we need to, we need to normalize the conversations around mental health,” Executive Director, Christina Crist, said.

The Terre Haute Humane Society will also be on-site offering pet adoptions.

“We’ve had to up our budget for mental health services alone. All the money that is raised for this event will go solely to our services that Team of Mercy provides to the entire Wabash Valley, not just Vigo County,” Crist added.
