SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Sullivan City Pool now has a tentative opening date.

A news release says the city has set the tentative opening date as Saturday, July 23 when the Sullivan City Pool will open to the public.

Mayor Clint Lamb said this is a day residents have been waiting for.

“The People of this amazing community are absolutely ecstatic,” said Lamb. “There are so many great things happening here in Sullivan and this project is at the top of their hearts and minds. We look forward to delivering this iconic establishment to our deserving citizens.”

Part of the reason for the opening is the recent influx of funding due to a $1,000,000 READI Grant from the Wabash River Regional Development Authority, through the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. The funds were made available as part of the American Rescue Plan.

Sullivan residents are gearing up for the opening. Sullivan resident Katie Harrison said that she drives by the pool most days and has since its progression since the very start.

“My kids want me to drive by all the time and see the progress and they just can’t wait,” Harrison said. “It’s been years in the making of this pool coming along.”

Sullivan resident Nicole Johnson said that she’s also excited about the opening announcement. She’s the manager of the Juicy Smoothie Shop in downtown, and said that the pool and the business should fit well together in the community.

“We’re excited to have the pool opening up because it does really go hand in hand with summer time,” Johnson said.

The pool is just one of many projects going on in Sullivan. Harrison said that she’s excited to see it completed in the future.

“There’s so much going on in the Sullivan community right now,” Harrison said.

The Pool originally opened in 1963, however, in 2018 the pool had been closed due to safety concerns and costly renovations needed. The pool as built had an original life expectancy of just 25 years.

The revitalized pool will be home to two rock climbing walls, a lily pad walk, a diving board, two slides, a zero-entry splash area, and a newly renovated pool deck, bathhouse, sundeck, concession stand and shades areas and cabanas.

A dedication ceremony is planned for later in August.
