SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Sullivan County residents continue their support to the family of Ashley and Grace Hedden.

On Thursday, students, coaches and parents gathered at Sullivan Middle School to create different ways to show their support to the Hedden family. The entire family was part of the Sullivan archery team.

Archery head coach Mark Hiatt says it was important to bring the community together as they show their supports to families affected.

“Bring the kids together to try and bring some cheer and joy and the emotional support for each other and more importantly make some get well soon cards for the people involved and some sympathy cards,” Hiatt said. “Just to let the families know we’re thinking about them.”

Assistant archery coach Alex Grable says the spark Ashley provided to the team will forever be missed.

“She was our go to person when we needed to get the kids settled down or if we had trouble with any kid and it’s going to be a huge hole,” Grable said. “Especially with both families affected but I think we’re all going to come together and it’s going to make us stronger. We’re ready for Kenny and Emma to come back and get this deal rolling again like Ashley would want it to be.”

Grace’s coaches say she was just beginning to really show what she was made of while on the archery team.

“Grace was one of my students and she shot her first tournament Saturday,” assistant coach Don Chambers said. “This past Saturday. She placed, got a medal and she was so excited and I mean it’s just something. It’s terrible.”

Chambers describes Ashley as more than just a colleague but a great friend as well as she would look after his son through her staff position at Sullivan Middle School.

“I have a disabled son that’s non-verbal,” Chambers said. “So I can’t ask him how his day went but I always asked Ashley hey what about Arch and she would tell me don’t worry about Archer, I got him. I mean you can’t replace that.”

Coach Grable says they could never replace Ashley and her daughter Grace, but they want their family to know that they have an army of support that will always be there for them.

Different forms of support are available to anyone who would like to help the family of Ashley and Grace Heeden. There are many different ways to support the family including through Clean Cut Painting and Finishing LLC | Facebook, or by going to Alex Grable’s Facebook page and joining in on the Turkey Hunt.
