SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Veterans Day may now be over, but local schools in Sullivan County continued to honor those who have served our country with programs that took place on Monday.

Veterans Day programs were held at Sullivan High School, as well as Sullivan Middle School, Carlisle Elementary, and Carlisle Middle.

Chief Master Sergeant Amber Vanness serves with the Air Force at the 181st Intelligence Unit in Terre Haute. Vanness spoke at Sullivan High School on Monday and explained why honoring veterans is such an important mission.

“It’s important because we wouldn’t have the freedoms that we have today if it weren’t for the men and women who sacrificed, who defended our freedoms,” Vanness said.

Vanness also noted she decided to join the Air Force for many reasons, but that the number one reason, is due to her love of her country and willingness to serve.
