VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Due to recent storms and flooding, a Vigo County road is closed after a portion of the road crumbled away leading to a main line break and a boil order for some residents.

With the road closure affecting parts of Funkhouser in western Vigo County, residents should avoid driving in the area. According to Fayette Township Water, the boil order is in effect for Funkhouser Pl. to New Goshen Rd. including Haymaker Ave. between Funkhouser Pl. and Strole Pl. until further notice.

Larry Robbins, the Vigo County Engineer and Highway Director said crews found the soil in that area, as well as the materials used for the road, were not ideal. When the soil became overly saturated, the road gave way during the storm.

“That’s probably most of it, [it] is just an old road, an old mine road that was probably turned into a public roadway back when and just not very good material used in its initial construction, so it’s something we’re dealing with now,” Robbins said.

Robbins also explained that the crews will get the old soil out and bring in suitable backfill, then crews can start working to rebuild the road. Robbins expects the construction to take at least a couple of weeks to get things re-opened.
