TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Steel Dynamics Heartland, LLC is planning to add 84 full-time jobs through a $231 million expansion of its Vigo County manufacturing facility.
Documents from a recent Vigo County Council meeting included a request for a 10-year tax abatement for the expansion of the facility, which currently operates in the Vigo County Industrial Park. The expansion would add 390,000 square feet to the facility and allow for steel processing advancements, including the installation of galvanizing and paint lines.
Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett said that the project was met with some delays due to the pandemic, but he is pleased that the project could potentially be approved by Vigo County Council.
“There was the potential to have expansion, but we didn’t know if it’d actually happen,” Bennett said. “Their announcement is very exciting for the community.”
The request referenced the addition of 84 full-time jobs with an estimated annual wage of $80,000 or more, including benefits. The facility currently employs 226 people with an average annual wage of $95,575. Steel Dynamics plan to retain all of its current 226 employees.
“When you’re talking about an over $200 million investment, hiring over 80 employees making over $80,000 a year, those are exact things we need in our Terre Haute community,” Bennett said.
The project has a target completion date of December 31, 2022.
A letter from Terre Haute Economic Development Corporation President Steve Witt showing support for the project was included in the meeting documents.
Witt’s letter included reference to the groundbreaking of the Steel Dynamics facility as a start-up steel processing plant under different ownership in June 1998. The letter also referenced over $9 billion in annual revenue for Steel Dynamics, Inc. and nearly 10,000 employees company-wide.
Vigo County Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed tax abatement plan on August 3rd.
