Statehouse Wrap Week 1: lawmakers introduce bills in Indianapolis

Local News

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The first week of the 2021 legislative session in Indianapolis is wrapping up with hundreds of bills introduced in the Indiana Senate and House of Representatives.

Local Senator Jon Ford (R) has 11 pieces of legislation, 10 bills and 1 resolution, he has either authored or co-authored. One of those bills aims to place the National Suicide Prevention and Human Trafficking hotline numbers on the backs of student IDs for 6-12 graders.

Ford said he hopes this bill will help give children access to mental health resources.

Another bill Ford has authored for the 2021 session would authorize a pilot program to help enforce highway worksite speed limits. The enforcement of the law would occur when drivers went 11 mph or more over the designated worksite speed limit.

Ford is also proposing that COVID-19 be listed as an exposure risk disease. Ford says this would allow COVID-19 to be listed in line-of-duty deaths for first responders.
