TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A special proclamation was made on Thursday to recognize September as National Senior Center Month.
Terre Haute mayor Duke Bennett read that proclamation Thursday morning at the Wabash Activity Center. The center offers all sorts of fun activities for seniors including classes ranging from line dancing to tai chi.
The center also has events scheduled this month like a fall rummage sale from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on September 15 and 16, and a health fair taking place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on September 22.
Board member Karen Long explains the importance of centers like this.
“Not every senior is in a senior living facility. Many are still actively living in their homes and they want to be and the senior center gives them a place to come meet with friends, just socialize, talk to people, get conversations so they’re not isolated,” Long explained.
The Wabash Activity Center is located at 300 South 5th Street in Terre Haute. Membership is $30 dollars for 6 months, and $60 dollars for the whole year.
