CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Ill. (WTWO-WAWV) — The Cumberland Community Unit School District 77 has cancelled school for Friday November 10, 2023, according to a Facebook post from the school unit.
The Veteran’s Day program is also cancelled. The district also cancelled all sports practices for both Thursday and Friday.
Cumberland County Coroner Steve Sherwood confirmed that long-time district employee Mike Oakley has died, causing the closure.
Oakley had been serving as the transportation director with the district.
In a post to Facebook on Thursday night, the district stressed that the closure had nothing to do with school safety and that more details would be released later.
