VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – After seven years of service with the Vincennes Police Department, Sara the K9 will be retiring.
After undergoing surgery Sara was recently diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer.
She started with the Vincennes police department in March 2015 with Sergeant Kody Waggoneer. Later she was reassigned with Sergeant Jon O’Brien in 2019. Her duties were to assist with suspects and sniff out illegal narcotics within the community. She also played a big role in building community relations between the police and the community.
Sergeant O’Brien and his family will be keeping Sara and have decided to let her enjoy the remainder of her life as a family pet.
“We spend more time with these dogs than we do our own family. We spend our entire shift with them plus our time at home. So to say that we’ve become attached to them is an understatement,” O’Brien said.
Sergeant O’Brien also said that Sara is not in pain and is doing well.
