VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Christmas is only 75 days away and a local organization wants to make sure the holiday is joyful for families in need.

This week the Salvation Army of Vigo County opened up registration for its Christmas Assistance Program. To sign up for the program, households can come to the Salvation Army Corps Community Center at 234 South 8th Street.

Applicants can come on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and should bring proof of Vigo County Residence, which can include social security cards for every member of the household, birth certificates for anyone under 18, and photo ID’s for anyone age 18 or older.

The Salvation Army will then sign families up for programs like Shop with a Cop, Adopt-a-Family, or Toys for Tots.

“When a parent walks away from the sign-ups knowing that their children are going to have a positive Christmas season, there’s a joy on their face, there’s a spring in their step. Life is better and that is an opportunity we can provide to them because we did it as a community,” Capt. Jeremy Fingar, Corps Officer of Salvation Army of Vigo County said.

Meanwhile, Toys for Tots said that toy collection boxes are going out to the five counties it serves, so people are encouraged to donate a toy. Toys for Tots also said the organization is partnering with Great Clips to collect toys and will have a toy drive at Buffalo Wild Wings on October 23.
