TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign is underway and one volunteer bell ringer in Terre Haute is bringing smiles to all he meets.
Bill Youman has been a volunteer bell ringer since 2011. He said he continues to volunteer because of all the people the Salvation Army has helped throughout the years.
The 82-year-old said people ask him how he can ring the bell all day without a break. He said he answers by explaining that he is a former history teacher, and he thinks about all the tough times people have experienced throughout history.
His favorite aspect of bell ringing?
“I guess meeting all the people and just saying hello. I make the comment that even if they don’t give, most of them have a nice smile, and it’s Christmas season, cheery holiday season, and it’s just a good time to meet people and enjoy seeing people,” Youman said.
The Salvation Army is still taking volunteers to ring the bell and help bring in donations this season. To register visit their website here.
