VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Local celebrities and business groups will be rowing toward a goal this weekend in an effort to build a boathouse near the Wabash River.

Wabash Valley Crew will host the second annual rowing challenge at the Vigo County YMCA this Saturday, Feb. 25. The challenge starts at 9 a.m. with celebrity rowers competing, and corporate teams competing at 9:30 a.m. The event is being held to raise funds for a boathouse at Fairbanks Park.

WTWO’s Mike Tank will be among the many local celebrities participating in the competition.

The boathouse would give people in the community the opportunity to row and kayak recreationally while also providing rowing education as well.

“We’ve got this beautiful asset we’re not using here so let’s think outside the box and create a new opportunity in this community. We have all the assets. We’re just waiting for the boathouse and the curriculum to go along with that,” said James Owen, President of the Wabash Valley Crew.

The Wabash Valley Community Foundation is offering a $150,000 dollar matching grant to double the number of donated funds. The Wabash Valley Crew hopes to reach its fundraising goal for the boathouse by the end of the year.
