TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Students from Rose-Hulman worked to make a difference in their community by providing a little light to the elderly and veterans.

Senior Education Ministries, a faith based non-profit provides programs to help give the elderly more independence.

Executive Director Lori Alpin says she was touched to see so many take an interest in their mission.

“To have Rose-Hulman contact us and say could you use some help? It was such a wonderful blessing,” Alpin. “It started raining so I was a little panicked but they actually stayed through the rain and everything else. So a lot has gotten done and honestly we couldn’t have done it without them.”

Students helped by picking up debris, filling holes in parking lots and cutting down dangling trees.

“Take advantage of all these experiences and all these clubs and all these opportunities that’s thrown at you,” John Maheras, Rose-Hulman freshman. “I think being able to do a service project with a bunch of friends from my floor and at the same time helping out the community and helping out senior citizens.”

The ministry runs mostly on donations. They aspire to make sure the elderly don’t feel alone.

“Because they can feel marginalized. We see a high suicide rate among elderly people,” Kyle Andrews, a volunteer with Senior Education Ministries said. “There’s a lot of depression and of course COVID has added to that so it’s crucial the work that Senior Education Ministries does.”

For Maheras, this day of serving showed him that volunteering is something he wants to continue to do.

“That kind of motivates you to get everything done and help out the community,” Maheras said. “This is a great experience and I definitely want to do it again.”

Other students who helped out say they were just happy they could lend a helping hand and provide a positive impact to their community.
