TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Rethink, Inc, a non-profit in Terre Haute wants to create a Peace Garden next to its building.
The organization is currently raising funds to make it a reality. The garden would be along South 13th Street which is also called Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Way. To honor Dr. King’s legacy, Rethink wants to create a space for the community and visitors to enjoy.
The garden would include a fountain, bird feeders, squirrel feeders, seating, and also a flower, fruit, and vegetable garden. The goal is to create a green space in the middle of the city for everyone to enjoy.
“And not just green spaces, but functionally, active green spaces that also provide food, that also provides habitat for birds, bees, butterflies, and insects that we really, really need and that also provides a space for education for our children who need to learn about the garden, about growing food, about eating healthy,” said Shikha Bhattacharyya, Executive Director of Rethink, Inc.
Rethink’s goal is to raise $12,500 by the end of April. If they do that, they’ll receive a matching grant from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. But they must reach that goal by April 30th to get the matching grant.
Those interested in donating can go to Rethink, located at 1544 South 13th Street. Or they can also donate online at Rethink Inc.
Rethink is also inviting people in the community to join them for an Earth Day prayer ceremony on April 22nd at 4: 00 p.m. To learn more about the Earth Day prayer event, check out Rethink’s Facebook event page.
