VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– Changes could be coming to one busy intersection along State Road 63– but officials want to hear from the public first.
The Indiana Department of Transportation is hosting a public forum regarding to changes to an intersection near “The Beef House restaurant,” and Interstate 74 on Jan. 25th at the American Legion building in Cayuga. INDOT spokesperson Megan DeLucenay said they were looking to make it a reduced conflict intersection, or RCI.
“We want to make sure that we can enhance the safety of this intersection and also reduce crashes in that area. At the public hearing we will present what our preferred alternative is. That includes a new median opening and a raising of splitter islands on both sides of the intersection,” she said.
Plans are in the early stages– and DeLucenay said public comment is very valuable in the process.
“The community knows the area better than we do, and that’s why we value your comments. If you think, ‘Hey, this is something you might not have thought about when you came up with your alternative,’ we take those into consideration and every comment that is stated or sent in via online portal is reviewed and is responded to,” she said.
For those who can’t make the meeting, comments can also be submitted online until Feb. 9th. Construction for the project, which is estimated to cost around $800,000, is planned to begin in early 2024.
