TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Terre Haute police said a man has died of self-inflicted injuries after a barricade situation at the KFC near the intersection of Lafayette and Fort Harrison.

Approximately 17 Terre Haute police cars and the Special Response Team (SRT) arrived at the scene late Monday morning. The man, believed to be an employee at the restaurant, was alone inside, armed with a pair of scissors, according to police.

Ryan Adamson, Terre Haute Police Department’s Public Information Officer, said they were concerned for the man’s safety.

“The Terre Haute Police Pepartment SRT team arrived and had several conversations with this individual and he refused to come out. Once the conversation stopped, once he wouldn’t answer the phone, once the phone rang busy, then we’re concerned for his safety,” said Adamson.

After nearly three hours, authorities sent in a robot to assess the situation. When police entered the building, they found the man unresponsive. He was transported to a nearby hospital, and was later pronounced dead.

No names are being released at this time.

The situation is still under investigation.
