DANA, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Plans are underway to unveil a new stone for a Civil War veteran buried at Bono Cemetery.
Cemetery board member Nancy McMahan says they discovered two years ago that the Union soldier’s stone was deteriorating and had become unreadable.
Because of this, the board decided to go through the process of getting a new stone. This time, with a design appropriate to the time period in which he served.
“1861 he was enlisted and discharged from the military July 1, 1864, so it was a challenge to get the proper documentation from the 1860s but we were successful and through the help of the Department of Veterans Affairs, we’re happy to display this monument,” McMahan said.
The stone unveiling will be part of a larger memorial day service taking place at Bono Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2021.
