SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A pickup truck traveling westbound on State Road 54 at a high rate of speed struck a car sitting in traffic waiting for another crash to be cleared away on early Sunday morning.
The initial crash, an overturned vehicle near County Road 275 East, was being attended to by Sullivan County Deputies Justin Copeland and Cole Boatright, who temporarily closed the highway, according to Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom. While emergency personnel were clearing the scene, a pickup truck struck a vehicle waiting in traffic. The pickup truck went airborne, before coming to rest in a yard.
The driver of the pickup, Allen Lee, was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated/endangerment. Alcohol was a factor in the crash, and upon further investigation of the pickup, Copeland found 70 grams of marijuana and over 100 pills, classified as a schedule 4 controlled substance.
The occupants of the other vehicle were not seriously injured, but were examined by medical professionals. Emergency personnel were already working in the roadway at the previous crash scene.
Agencies assisting the sheriff’s office were Sullivan City Police, Sullivan City Fire Department and Sullivan County Ambulance.
