VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– The Ouabache Trails Park is closed through until at least Monday with electrical issues that also have postponed the Happy Trails Music Festival scheduled for this weekend.
Knox county parks and recreation superintendent Rhonda Foster said two electricians have been working to repair the issues this week, but have been delayed by rain.
The electricians will provide a short-term solution. Foster said the park is working with Duke Energy to have their electrical equipment replaced throughout the park.
“Ideally, with this repair, we can keep the electricity going, while Duke works in stages throughout the park. That would be our ideal world,” she said.
Foster said the park is looking for funding to help with this project. She said the park has requested some of the money from American Rescue Plan Act funds the county has, which amounts to be $3 million.
“I will be looking at other grants, other funding, which are there, we do qualify, however, it is such a lengthy process that we would not see any of those funds until 2024. We need to make the repair now,” Foster said. “That’s why we’re really counting on the ARPA funds to come in and help us with this.”
Foster also said the Happy Trails Music Festival was postponed indefinitely. She hopes it will take place sometime in the fall. She said whenever the festival is held, the proceeds will still be donated to local organizations who work assisting the homeless.
“We’re hoping maybe this fall, we can go ahead and reschedule, if not, it’ll be next year and it’ll be bigger and better. The money is still going to be earmarked for the homeless,” she said.
