TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Indiana State University kicked off its Speaker Series at the Tilson Auditorium on Tuesday.

The first guest speaker was two-time Olympic medalist figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. Kerrigan is one of the most recognizable sports icons over the last 25 years.

One of her most notable achievements was her silver medal performance in the 1994 Winter Olympics.

Kerrigan is well decorated in her figure skating career, but she also started a career in commentating and did work in television.

After her speech, Kerrigan said that the message that she wants people to take away is that you’re stronger than what you think.

“We are all stronger than we think we are,” Kerrigan said. “We are strong people and it’s just a matter of trying to navigate through that.”

The next Speaker Series event will take place in October. Influential civil rights leader Carol Anderson will be the guest.
