New pool contract to begin Sept. 1

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — If everything goes according to plan, the Vigo County YMCA pool could soon be re-opening.

The Terre Haute Board of Public Works Monday approved a two-year contract with the YMCA to reopen the pool.

The contract will take effect Sept. 1.

The pool closed a year ago due to financial concerns; however, Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett announced earlier this month that the City would take on some of the financial burden.

“They offer a great benefit to the community and we want to just see this relationship continue. We’ve got buildings like that that can be somewhat of a burden to the city itself,” said City Attorney Eddie Felling. “So to have a tenant that’s there that offers a great service to essentially everyone in the community, we want to see that continue to happen.”

The YMCA will continue to pay rent and a monthly stipend of $6,000 to help offset utility costs of the building.

For the remainder of this year the YMCA will pay $1,000 in rent a month to the city.

In 2020 the rent will go up to $2,500 then to $3,000 in 2021.

A formal signature is still required from the YMCA board before the contract can be finalized.

While the contract will begin Sept. 1, a date has not been set for the pool’s official re-opening.
