TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A newly conducted survey showed nearly 200 people are living on the streets or in non-habitable conditions in Vigo County.

Volunteers with the Homeless Council of the Wabash Valley conducted the survey July 19 by visiting strategic locations to conduct a count.

The survey concluded that the approximate homeless population for the county is 566. That includes 372 sheltered individuals and another 194 unsheltered.

The “sheltered” homeless population includes those staying in hotels, shelters, recovery houses and transitional housing programs. This count was conducted through site visits and phone calls to administrators.

The unsheltered population includes those living on the streets, abandoned structures or in vehicle. These numbers were gained through one-on-one interactions.

In addition to the county, volunteers also identified and addressed the needs of those they interviewed.

Personal hygiene items, water, bug spray and other items were also distributed as needed. The items were donated by Bethany House, Indiana American Water and the Vigo County Health Department.
