CHARLESTON, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — A house fire in Charleston, Illinois has caused residents to be displaced.

Charleston Fire Chief Steve Bennett says the call came in around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning that a home in Longacres Estates in Charleston had caught fire.

According to Chief Bennett, when firefighters arrived on scene they saw flames coming from the front bedroom window.

One resident suffered minor burns and was evaluated by EMS on scene. Most of the damage to the home was near the front bedroom window but there was smoke damage throughout. Chief Bennett added that the fire was able to be quickly extinguished with crews leaving the scene by 5:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigation revealed the fire was caused by “misuse of smoking materials.” Due to the extent of the damage, the residents have been displaced.

The Charleston Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Charleston Police Department, Coles-Moultrie County 911, Ameren CIPS, and the American Red Cross.
