TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – People laced up their running and walking shoes Monday and took part in the annual Memorial Day 5K in Terre Haute.

The run and walk took place in Deming Park and Dobbs Park. There was also a one mile fun run.

Organizers say the event is a way to remember the fallen and honor all service members past and present.

“It’s in remembrance of those that are serving, past and present, and what they have sacrificed and what they have given for our country,” says Jennifer Johnson, Asssitant Director of Recreation.

Johnson says turnout Monday was better than the past several years and that’s something the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department was happy to see.

“We’re part of recreation. That’s what we do. We want to see the community healthy and active, and they’re enjoying a beautiful trail, a trip through the park. It’s absolutely gorgeous,” says Johnson.

Participants also got the opportunity to compete for awards in the 5K and win door prizes.
