Local sister to be minister of record for federal death row inmate

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A local Sister of Providence says she will be the minister of record for a federal death row inmate set to be executed at the federal prison in Terre Haute.

Sister Barbara Battista says she has been meeting with Keith Dwayne Nelson.

He had been scheduled to be executed on Friday, but a judge has halted the execution. The judge says the government needs a prescription for the lethal injection drug they plan to use. The government is appealing.

Battista says she will be inside the death chamber when his execution takes place.

“It’s a humbling and sacred responsibility that someone from his faith tradition, someone who he wants there to witness, to bear witness, and to companion him to his death and that’s my role on Friday,” says Battista.

Nelson’s execution had been scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday and we will be following the latest developments.
