TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Rio Grande Elementary School Counselor was recognized Tuesday as a 2022 Indiana School Counselor of the Year Top 10 finalist by the Indiana School Counselor Association.
Hillary Eup earned the recognition for her support efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was responsible for helping teachers and counselors better connect with their students during remote learning and facilitating workshops on how to create virtual offices.
She is also currently training a therapy dog that will be used at the school. Her peers surprised her with the honor, and she said that it is the students that motivate her to do the innovative work that she does.
“Getting to know the kids on a more personal level means a lot,” Eup said. “I get to teach them every week and I get to know about them as a person more so than academics.”
