Linton community mourns loss of musician, friend

LINTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)- A collision on the corner of Ohio and South 3rd street on Saturday left one dead and another injured.

Of the two, John Giles of Linton succumbed to his injuries Saturday night after hitting a turning car.

Giles was known in the community for being the lead guitarist in the band, Addiction.

Friends and family shared stories of his comedic ways, and said how he never really took anything too seriously.

His eldest son, Landon, said he even briefly thought it was a joke when he got the initial call saying his father had died.

I kinda thought it was a joke because it seemed like something he would do, and I was just waiting for him to call us and tell us that it was all a joke.”

Landon and his three other siblings said they were “getting through it,” but today was especially hard for them. July 30th is Gile’s birthday.

He would have been 38.

His mother, Paula Giles, said as their tradition goes, the birthday person would get a piece of cake smashed in their face, but this year, everyone will celebrate by getting cake smashed in their face.

Paula also said that Danica, Giles’s youngest, is celebrating her birthday without her father for the first time.

She said since the pair have birthdays just two days apart, they always celebrated together.

Giles bandmates will play tribute to him at Linton’s National Night Out on Aug. 6. Park officials said the concert proceeds will go to the family to help with funeral costs.
