KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Folks in the Knox County area may have been concerned following a recent social media post that declared all pre-planned events and children’s activities involving the Parks Department had been canceled until further notice.
The post made by the Wabash Trails Park Facebook page read, “Sadly, we are canceling all pre-planned activities at the Parks Department. All children’s activities are canceled until further notice. Our apologies.”
The post garnered a number of disappointed responses from area locals who were excited about upcoming events and confused about what this announcement meant for the park in general as well as for their already locked-in reservations to utilize park resources.
MyWabashValley.com reached out to the parks department for comment or reasoning behind the sudden cancellation and learned that the decision was reportedly made as a temporary one due to budget issues.
Knox County Parks Board President Tina Kunkler-Laake said that the group has since announced the return of a number of spring events including Camper Appreciation Day in April or May, Yard Sales in April, and a Mud Day for children.
Further, Kunkler-Laake clarified that all reservations previously made with the department will remain on the schedule.
“We had some issues with budget and program planning that are now worked out to ensure proper procedures with planning and funding are followed. This cancellation was intended to be temporary,” Kunkler-Laake said.
The parks remain open for visitors at this time.

Knox County Parks WILL be hosting the following Spring activities: Camper Appreciation Day in April or May (weather permitting), Yard Sales in April, and Mud Day for children. All reservations are still standing and the parks are open for your enjoyment. We appreciate the community support for the parks and activities.
We had some issues with budget and program planning that are now worked out to ensure proper procedures with planning and funding are followed. This cancellation was intended to be temporary. The long-term goals of this parks department include providing a fiscally responsible department (using tax dollars and income from rentals and activity fees) that continues to provide individual opportunities and programming in our parks for Knox County citizens and visitors. I’m sorry for the inconvenience to those who look forward to events in the parks. Thank you all for your interest in our county’s beautiful natural resources.
Tina Kunkler-Laake, Parks Board President
