VIGO CO, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Black Friday shopping is a tradition around Thanksgiving, but it could also be the ideal time for a thief to strike.

Sergeant Matt Ames with the Indiana State Police said car break-ins are more common this time of year. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind if you plan on shopping:

  • Don’t go to stores alone; bring a family member or friend.
  • Place items you buy in the trunk, so they are not visible.
  • Park in a well-lit area and lock your car.
  • Dispose of your boxes properly; leaving them out could be a target on your home.

“Slow down; I know it is an exciting time; you’re going shopping from one place to another place. Make sure you’re locking your car the entire time, and you’re not leaving anything out a potential thief could see that they could take from you and take your holiday cheer,” Ames said.
