VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An Illinois man has been arrested after police said he was caught driving at over 100 mph while under the influence on S.R. 63 in Vermillion County.

According to a release from Indiana State Police, the incident occurred at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. A trooper was driving along S.R. 63 near the intersection with S.R. 234 when a vehicle approached the patrol car at a high rate of speed.

ISP said rear radar showed the vehicle to be driving at 101 mph, and that the vehicle continued to speed as it overtook the trooper and reportedly cut him off as a construction zone forced a merge point in the road.

After pulling the vehicle over, Police said the driver Romell Watson, 24, of Dolto, IL. showed signs of being under the influence and failed field sobriety tests.

A certified chemical test reportedly showed Romell to have a BAC of .11%.

Watson was taken to the Vermillion County Jail and preliminarily charged with the following;

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction
    • A level 6 felony
  • Reckless driving in a workside
    • A level 6 felony
  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangerment
    • A class A misdemeanor
