TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An inmate at the Terre Haute Federal Prison is dead after an altercation Friday afternoon involving multiple inmates.

According to a release from the Department of Justice, around 4:50 p.m. Friday, staff responded to the altercation and secured the area. Inmate Carlos Shelton was taken to a local hospital for life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead by hospital staff.

A second inmate was treated for minor injuries at the prison.

Shelton was a 43-year-old serving a 360-month sentence related to possession and intent to distribute controlled substances, including meth.

He had been in custody in Terre Haute since June 21, 2018.
