VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced lane restrictions along I-70 in Western Vigo County and the temporary closure of Darwin Road over the interstate.

Beginning on or after March 31st, INDOT said nightly lane restrictions on I-70 Eastbound and Westbound under Darwin Road should be expected.

Megan Dulcenary, Director of Public Relations for the INDOT Crawfordsville District says “In some instances, traffic may be routed off the interstate and back on, via the ramps. Now that could be due to a temporary traffic signal or flagging, but someone will be there directing traffic to get back on the interstate.”

On or after, Saturday, April 1st, crews will close down Darwin Road over I-70. The closure comes as crews will begin the replacement of the bridge, a $2.7 million dollar project.

“We are monitoring every bridge, every road in the state as best we can and it’s time for a replacement,” Dulcenary said. “It’s going to be safe, it’s kind of nearing the end of its life,” she added.

The official detour for the Darwin Road closure follows South Robinson Place to West Illiana Drive to West National Avenue.

INDOT officials said maps, including Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze will be updated as well as 511in.org, a site that Dulcenary says is a great resource, especially as construction season is kicking off.

Officials also noted that Darwin Road is expected to reopen in mid-September. The entire project is expected to wrap up in early October.

INDOT encourages drivers in the area under Darwin Road to use caution and be safe.

“We want our workers to be safe,” Dulcenary said. “National Work Zone Awareness Week is coming up, April 17th. We’re really trying to, ahead of that week, get the message out, just protect people along the roads, they have families. They are people too,” she added.
