FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Following the death of a longtime local firefighter from a heart attack, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Vigo County.

Holcomb directed flags to be flown at half-staff throughout the county on Wednesday from sunrise to sunset in honor of 74-year old Dave Phelps. Phelps died from an apparent heart attack while at the scene of a house fire. He served as a firefighter for 59 years and was named the 2023 Mr. IVFA earlier this year.

Visitation at DeBaun Springhill Chapel runs Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m., with the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association conducting a memorial service at the end of visitation.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday morning with a procession travelling to New Harmony Cemetery for the burial service.

Members of the community are encouraged to line the procession route in honor of Dave Phelps, route details can be found here.
